Fuerza Chile: “United for Clean Water” Campaign Goes National
March 23, 2012, Curanipe, Chile—This Saturday marks the launch of the campaign "Fuerza Chile! United for Clean Water" for the preservation of Chilean beaches and coastline. This campaign began with five locations in three regions and has now become a national effort. In 16 sites, 9 regions, local communities will come together to collect trash and debris to restore the habitat of the Chilean coast and ocean.
"Fuerza Chile" began as a campaign of the nonprofit organization Save The Waves Coalition (STW) and its partners and collaborators to provide humanitarian relief to the hardest hit communities immediately following the tragic earthquake-tsunami of February 27, 2010 (27/F).
To give continuity to the effort led by Save The Waves, in conjunction with the Muale-Itata Coast Keeper Program and various zonal coordinators, this next phase of work incorporates the efforts of local actors, the Chilean people, and presents an opportunity for direct action, emphasizing community involvement in coastal and marine conservation.
Initially, the campaign began with iconic places related to surfing: Pichilemu, Punta de Lobos, Loanco, Curanipe, and Cobquecura. However, as an open activity in which everyone was invited to join and participate, a wave of interested communities, organizations, schools, youth groups, unions, private companies, etc. began organizing cleanups around the country, transforming the event into a national effort. The new sites include: Arica, Iquique, La Serena, Con-Con, Quintero, Pichilemu, Punta de Lobos, Iloca, Constitución, Loanco, Curanipe, Cobquecura, Buchupureo, Mehuín, and Carelmapu.

Besides being a day of voluntary action, the goal of the campaign is to promote a social movement to establish broad stewardship of fragile ecosystems by communities, government agencies, citizens groups, schools, private industry, etc. This movement encourages that individuals and communities unite for clean water and to protect Chilean beaches, rivers, estuaries, lakes, creeks, etc.
This Saturday, March 24 will be a day of stewardship of Chilean beaches and the coast nationwide with 16 cleanups sites throughout the country. The public is invited to participate in this unprecedented movement to preserve irreplaceable natural resources of the coast and sea.
